An extension to
the Main Stand is undertaken at a cost of £50,000 and this opened in
November 1969.
The Greyhound racing consortium were brought out and Speedway racing was
proposed, bringing much protest from the Hospital (probably looking at
the amount of riders coming through the doors) and local residents.
Alec White was
sacked from the board after falling out with Jim Bonsor. It is
discovered the pitch is not quite right, Instead of a rectangle it was
more of a parallelogram. Talking of pitches, Watford moved training
grounds from Croxley Green to the Crematorium at Garston.
The season is
one long struggle in Division 2 as Jim Bonsor attempts to stay there ‘on
the cheap’. It does not work and Watford struggle only just avoiding
relegation.
However it was
not all doom and gloom as Watford beat Bill Shankley’s Liverpool to earn
Watford’s first ever FA Cup Semi-Final against Chelsea. Shankley was not a
fan, stating that he would not have gone to watch Watford had he lived
in the town and was given a free ticket.
